Board Selection for Beginners

Choosing your first "beginner board" is a lot like choosing a date for the prom. There are boards that will make you feel like you're out with a cousin, awkward and frustrating then there are boards out of your league. In the end it comes down to what you'll have the most fun with. Because no matter how good you imagine yourself surfing in public, beginners all look the same: they look like kooks.

Longboards (surfboards 9' to 11' in length) have been the traditional way of learning to surf for beginners. The boards are longer, thicker and more stable making it easier to balance. I would recommend this for anyone learning to surf that has no board sport (skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, etc.) knowledge or background.

Take safety precautions when choosing a board. There are special boards that are padded with softer materials. These boards will soften the impact when you fall off and hit the board, or when the board hits you. Specially made fins are softer too. They don't grab the wave as much so it feels like you're driving a car with four flat tires, but they won't slice you open if you get run over by your own board.
