Getting kids to eat their greens is a lot like bathing a dog for the first time. You got all the best formulas for producing a clean pet and what you end up with in the end is a dog that wants to run away and an owner that is frustrated and dripping wet. But if you (as the parent) decided that the first time is the last, you're in for a difficult ride back to gaining control of your authority; You child took it away from you and although you run the home, the child has the power to tell you what to do in in. But don't give up hope. You are the parent. You take control of your life and the health of a fragile, young child.
Getting kids to eat salads is like the military. You don't ask questions and any questions you want answered, won't be. So in other words they come with some rules here's some rules my wife follows without her even knowing it:
Rule #1: Salads and Veggies must be served at every meal. No matter what kind - can corn, can beans, ready-made-salads from the market, celery or tomato slices
Rule #2: Make up names for your veggies. Broccoli are "small trees." It's fun in a kids mind when he/she thinks he's a giant eating a forest tree by tree.
Rule #3: Keep dressings to a minimum. A small amount of dressing to the side of a child's plate shouldn't be any larger than a quarter. If they dip and lick and use it all up they need to finish the rest without any dressing.
Rule #4: The earlier the better. Unfortunately, kids learn from a young age that if they don't want to eat something, parents will allow them the freedom of choosing a sweeter, sometimes less nutritious, alternative. Don't allow it.
Rule #5: Allow children to eat with their hands. I know their hands can be filthy. So wash them. I know they touch everything near the table, but touch is what will bring them closer to their food. Touch is important at a young age and salads are something I love eating with my hands, even till today.
Have fun with salads because as far as making salads are concerned...there are NO RULES to them. You can make anything into a healthy and wholesome, delicious salad.
